Election Results Bode Well for 2026
On Tuesday, November 4, America received an unmistakable message—voters are fed up with the direction of the country under the Trump Administration. From coast to coast, Democrats achieved a resounding sweep of their Republican opponents, and the results are a clear referendum on the direction of the country and the leadership of Donald Trump and our Republican representatives in Congress.
National Results Feature Dramatic Wins
The first woman to win election as governor of Virginia, Abigail Spanberger, scored an overwhelming 14.6 point victory. In New Jersey Mikie Sherrill won her race for governor. In California, voters passed Initiative 50, a referendum allowing the redrawing of districts in their state—an effort to combat Republican Gerrymandering in states like Texas and Ohio–by a resounding 2 to 1. In New York City, Progressive Zohran Mamdani won the New York City Mayoral race BY more than a million more votes than the combined total of his opponents, though Trump-endorsed them.
While Democrats across the nation are energized by these results and feel a collective sense of relief, it is crucial that we KEEP UP THE MOMENTUM. This was an off-year election, and we face a much more difficult task in 2026—winning back The House and The Senate is the only way to stop Donald Trump and the GOP from ushering in a much darker future for our nation—the continued shredding of our social safety net, cuts to Medicaid, SNAP benefits, and to the non-profits that provide services to those among us who are most in need.
We must now turn our focus to unseating Republicans Michael Baumgartner and Dan Newhouse. THIS will require us reaching out to moderates and conservatives accustomed to supporting Republican candidates. We no longer have the luxury of turning our backs on conversations we find uncomfortable and walking away.
We MUST ensure that young voters feel heard, and that we truly understand their need for change, and their hopes for a better future.
Moving into 2026
Let's build on the positivity we see reflected in yesterday's results. Let's create plans to support those already harmed by GOP policies, and encourage our neighbors to join us in lifting up communities harmed by MAGA policies.
Let’s keep in mind that Republican voters feel the hurt of lost healthcare coverage as acutely as we do. Let’s remember that all working Americans feel the pinch of inflation. Let’s remember that right-wing media serves to fan the flames of hate through the spread of misinformation, and that our message of lifting up ALL Americans may be new or hard for some to believe.
Today we celebrate, but tomorrow our efforts to be better neighbors and stewards of our our community and country will prove our party is the one to lead our nation forward.
